2012 Annual Bishop's Appeal

The new, restructured Saint Cyril of Jerusalem Program is available on DVD at every parish and on-line to make religious education as convenient as possible to all adults in our Diocese.  Developed through the Parish Life and Ministries Office, it provides religious education to foster faith and educates with courses including Sacraments, Scripture, Prayer, Creed, Christian Living, Methodology, and Teaching People with Developmental Disabilities.  On-line courses are available at www.scoj.org Gina Donnarummo, Director of Adult Formation, says, “Learning and growing in one’s faith is essential and the new program makes it convenient whether you want to take the courses at your parish on DVD or log on to your home computer.”  Your gift to the ABA supports religious education programs for people of all ages!

 

Our parish’s goal this year is $90,000.  To date we have raised 342 gifts worth $66,227 from 323 donors, 74% of our goal.  Thank you to all for supporting the ABA!

EMPLOYMENT STRATEGIES WORKSHOP

 A series of Employment Strategies sessions will be held at St. Joseph Church starting Tuesday, May 15 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Pastoral Center meeting room.  Topics to be covered include resume and cover letter writing, interview strategies, job leads, skills, networking, technology, resources and more.  This program is underwritten by donations to our St. Joseph Box program and will be facilitated by Kathy Renzulli, CPRW, JCTC, CEMC, who has 20 years experience in employment services.

 

IT’S CARNIVAL TIME!!

This weekend, May 19-20, is the final opportunity to donate Carnival supplies:  6” and 9” paper plates, napkins, paper towels, ketchup (squeeze bottles) and Dawn dish soap.  This weekend is also the last chance for advanced ride tickets and wristbands.  More help is needed in the food tents each night; to volunteer, please sign up at the advanced ticket table.  Carnival sponsor forms are also available at the advanced ticket table.  If you have a business to promote or a message to convey, please stop by the advance ticket table.  Sponsorships are available for $35, $50, $100 and $250 for a Nightly Sponsor.  Raffle tickets can be turned into to the Parish Office this week or to the Raffle tent during the Carnival.  This Saturday evening, May 26, all Carnival Volunteers are invited to Midnight Mass and Workers Party.  Thank you!

The Spooner House and St. Vincent dePaul Society food banks are in continual need of non-perishable food items.  Brown grocery bags with a list of suggested items to hold donations are available behind the last church pew.  Please remember to pick up an item or two for the food banks when grocery shopping.  Grocery donations should be placed in the container in the Parents Room.

2013 MASS BOOK

 On Friday, April 13, the 2013 Mass book will be available in the Pastoral Center meeting room from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. for Mass intentions.  Mass offerings are $10.  Up to five weekend and unlimited weekday Masses may be scheduled during the first 30 days.  Those who cannot come on April 13 (or afterwards to the Parish Office) can request Masses in writing through the mail or by placing a separate envelope addressed to “2013 Mass requests” in the collection basket.  These Mass requests must be accompanied by the Mass offering and will be put into the Mass book after first-day Mass intentions are completed.  For more info, please call Ginny in the Parish Office.

 

GROCERY STORE CERTIFICATE SALE

 Beginning next weekend April 21/22 St. Joseph’s Parish will be selling Stop & Shop and ShopRite gift certificates after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday and after the 9 and 10:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday to benefit St. Joseph School.

COME AND SEE CATHOLIC BIBLE STUDY

ADOPT OUR YOUTH IN PRAYER

 This summer, teens from SJC will be joining thousands of other New England teens for Steubenville East, a weekend retreat at the University of Rhode Island.  The retreat is the opportunity for them to really dive into our faith and truly meet Christ, sometimes for the first time.  We thank you for supporting our Irish Night, car wash and Carnival dunk tank fundraising events.  Please pray for our teens for a successful retreat.

SINGLE MOM SUPPORT GROUP

 

Theresa Kasun-Peluso, a parishioner and single mom, would like to start a single mom support group at our parish to allow them to come together in prayer and to be able to get the word out about the needs of this group of women in our parish. If anyone is interested, please call Theresa directly (917-687-8108). For a single mom, her standard of living goes down 45% after divorce and only 15% of women are awarded any form of court-ordered spousal support. Most children live with their mothers and suffer the effects also. Less than 50% of the women who claim child support ever receive the full amount. Single moms have 40% higher incidence of major depression due to increased stresses and decreased social support.

GUARDIAN ANGELS  NEEDED

The “Guardian Angels” fund is a financial aid scholarship program which helps deserving students attend St. Joseph School.  Last year the program benefited 23 students from 16 families who otherwise might not have been able to afford a Catholic education.  Administered directly by our parish, funds collected by the “Guardian Angels” program subsidize a significant part of the tuition for active parish families who demonstrate some financial need.  If you would like to sponsor a child in our school this coming year for an amount from $250 to $4,000, please contact Msgr. Chris directly.  Monthly payments can be made starting at $25.

“Christ will not deceive us.  That is why our lives must be woven around the Eucharist.”  Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.  Please consider spending an hour on Tuesday or Friday to visit with Our Lord Jesus Christ during Eucharistic Adoration from 12 noon–7 p.m. in the Chapel.  At this time you may want to say a Rosary, read scripture or just sit quietly and open your heart to Jesus.  Volunteers are needed to commit to an hour on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Please call Sheila (924-8611) for more info.

ADORATION TIME CHANGE

Tuesday and Friday Eucharistic Adoration now begins immediately after the 12:05 p.m. Mass until 7 p.m. in the Chapel.  Please come and visit with Our Lord during this special time.

 

LITTLE SCHOLA

 

 

Did you know that St. Joseph has a “Schola?” What is a schola?  It’s a choir that meets to learn techniques of singing and to offer music out of the richness of our Catholic heritage.  St. Joseph’s Little Schola meets every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Choir Loft from September through Pentecost and new singers are welcome.  If you come to 7:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Masses you’ve heard the Little Schola.  Now is a great time to join for Easter!  Regular attendance at Wednesday rehearsals is required.  If you are interested, please attend a rehearsal.  Please use the Convent side door of the Church for access.

 

CHARITABLE DONATION OPPORTUNITIES

 

 

 

If you wish to donate financially to the needy in our community, please put your donation in the St. Joseph Box which is located behind the last pew in the church on the confessional side.  Any donations received in this box will go exclusively to help the needy.  Additionally, there is a collection bin in the Parents Room for food items for distribution continually to both the Spooner House and St. Vincent dePaul Society.

 

MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA  

This month’s prayer intention for the Miraculous Medal Novena is “for our country, in particular that the Holy Spirit will guide those who represent us in all levels of government”.  Join us on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in Church!!  There will also be a five minute homilette from Father Nick.

HELP NEEDED CLEANING ALTAR SERVER ROBES  

Parent volunteers are needed on a regular basis to pick up, wash and return the altar server robes to the Sacristy.  Please contact Father Nick if you are able to help.  And remember, “many hands make light work!”

 

SPANISH CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP  

A Spanish Charismatic Prayer Group will be meeting every Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Upper Room.  All are welcome to come and sing and pray.  Please contact Cesar Galicia (732-5319) for more information.

 

 

FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION  

St. Joseph Parish offers Eucharistic Adoration every Friday from 12 noon until 7 p.m. in our chapel.  Volunteers are especially needed (for teams of two) for an hour between 2 - 5 p.m.  If you would like to volunteer on a regular basis or as a back-up, please call Cecile (924-4005) or Sheila (924-9269).  Eucharistic Adoration is a wonderful, spiritual opportunity to spend some quiet time in prayer before Our Lord!

 

MOTHER’S CIRCLE  

The Mother’s Circle meets the second Friday of the month in the Upper Room at 10 a.m.  Mothers with their young children are invited for the opportunity for socializing and playtime.  For more info, please call Mary (888-4790) or Carrie (925-0437).  

 

LECTIO DIVINA

 

Come and find out what Lectio Divina is all about and how to grow into a deeper and more intimate relationship in union with our God.  Meetings are every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel.  Anyone interested may call Sister Carolyn (924-1449) for more information.

ADULT SACRAMENT PROGRAM INFORMATION  

Are you an adult in the Catholic Church who needs to receive the sacraments of baptism, communion and/or confirmation?  Or do you know someone who has not received any of these sacraments?  If so, contact Deacon Jeffrey Kingsley (922-8220) to receive more information about the process of receiving these sacraments through the Catholic Church’s program known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA).

Counseling is the most requested service on the United Way’s INFOLINE, yet many people cannot afford the cost of counseling or have difficult finding an agency to help.  If you or someone you know is struggling with serious issues, please contact Catholic Family Services (372-4301, ext 351), or email www.ccfc.ct.org.
